The Alliance Welcome Four New Board Members

The Alliance for a Healthier South Carolina is proud to welcome four distinguished leaders to our Board of Directors for 2026. Each brings deep expertise, a strong commitment to health equity, and a proven track record of advancing community health across South Carolina and beyond.


Karla Buru, DrPH, MPH, MSW
Deputy Director of Health Strategy and External Affairs & Chief of Staff, South Carolina Department of Public Health
Dr. Buru is a nationally recognized public health leader with extensive experience in health strategy, external affairs, and systems-level leadership. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of South Carolina, she has served as a Peace Corps Volunteer and Fulbright Scholar and is a 2023 de Beaumont Foundation 40 Under 40 in Public Health honoree. Her background in public health, social work, and communications brings a powerful, interdisciplinary perspective to the Alliance’s work.


Emily Carter, R.Ph.
Vaccines Account Director, Pfizer
Emily Carter is a licensed pharmacist with more than 30 years of experience spanning frontline care and healthcare strategy. Beginning her career in a rural, underserved hospital, she has remained deeply committed to improving access to care and addressing health inequities. Her work with large healthcare systems and her expertise in healthcare policy and outcomes strengthen the Alliance’s efforts to advance evidence-based solutions for healthier communities.


Anthony Jackson, MBA
Senior Vice President, Service Line Operations and System Chief Community Officer, Prisma Health
Anthony Jackson is a seasoned healthcare executive with over three decades of leadership experience. His career includes serving as hospital CEO, system-level executive, and community health champion across South Carolina and beyond. Known for building strong teams and advancing health equity, he has also received multiple community service honors and served on numerous civic and education boards. His strategic and operational leadership will be invaluable to the Alliance.


Quenton Tompkins, MPH
Executive Director, Government and Community Engagement, Medical University of South Carolina
A native South Carolinian, Quenton Tompkins has dedicated his career to ensuring under-resourced and rural communities are not left behind. At MUSC, he led the state’s most expansive mobile COVID-19 testing and vaccination response and established the institution’s first Office of Community Engagement. With more than 30 years of experience across healthcare, academia, and nonprofit leadership, Quenton brings a deep understanding of community-centered approaches to improving health outcomes.
